The we carry are the official patches from the supplier to the NASA Astronaut Office. They are the same patches used on the astronaut and launch and entry suits. There is no such thing as an "official" Mercury mission patch. The Mercury astronauts did not wear mission patches -- all the designs you see today are souvenir versions, created without the input of the astronauts. The first mission-specific patch was worn by the Gemini-5 crew, Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad. Cooper was the first to suggest the astronaut-designed patch as a result of not being allowed to name the spacecraft (as the Mercury astronauts had been, i.e. "Friendship 7", "Freedom 7" etc.). As result, the astronaut patches are also referred to as "Coopers". (As an aside, the Gemini 4 crew considered the American flag as their mission patch.) Mercury and Gemini patches are 3 inches and Apollo and Shuttle patches are 4 inches.
